Your role

AECOM is seeking an Environmental Planning Intern to join their team in Phoenix, Arizona supporting ongoing projects throughout the US West Region of North America.

This position involves environmental planning and project development activities for transportation and other infrastructure projects under the supervision of more senior staff. Expected assignments will include, but not be limited to, supporting environmental technical and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) studies for public and private transportation, and other infrastructure clients across the United States.

This position is expected to begin in March 2024.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting research, data reviews, and analysis to determine potential environmental effects.
  • Preparing text, maps, and graphics for National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents and permits.
  • Interprets and compares findings of relevant studies for compliance with local, state, and federal requirements, standard procedures, and client expectations.
  • Collects a variety of technical and statistical data and prepares reports and maps on topics, such as census information, land use, and the natural environment.
  • Utilizes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze data and prepare detailed maps for use in reports.
  • Supports planning studies and reports.
  • Supports agency stakeholder and public engagement efforts.
  • Assists with other duties assigned by senior staff and/or Project Managers.

Training & development

During the internship, interns will develop proficiency in conducting environmental research, data analysis, and preparing regulatory documents, gaining hands-on experience in compliance with NEPA regulations. You'll also enhance their skills in data collection, interpretation, and presentation, utilizing GIS for mapping and supporting planning studies.

Salary & benefits

The hourly range for this position is $20.00-25.00/hr.

About you

Minimum requirements:

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled in a university program pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Sciences, Planning, Geography, or a related field with the intent to continue after the internship unless graduating.
  • Candidates must have completed three years of study in their program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong technical writing skills and attention to detail.
  • Basic knowledge of environmental, sustainability, and transportation planning topics.
  • Related experience through internships or past employment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency with Geographic Information Systems, including ArcMap and ArcGIS Online.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently.
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License preferred to visit project sites, clients, and other AECOM offices when public transportation is not available. The selected candidate will undergo a Motor Vehicle Records review.
