The TD Bank Story 

The proprietary part of TD Bank was founded in 1855 and named The Bank of Toronto by the collaboration of millers and merchants. The founding philosophy of the bank was to serve a feeling of community and foster the growth of essential financial services. 

The Dominion Bank was founded in 1869 to help Canada undertake infrastructural projects. It was founded by a coalition of professionals, industrialists, and financiers. 
The Dominion Bank and The Bank of Toronto grew at a nearly equal pace at this time. 

Following the turn of the century, both banks continued to expand their operations. The Bank of Toronto increased by more than 100 locations within two decades while The Dominion Bank moved internationally to England, in 1911 and the United States, in 1919. 

In 1955, Toronto Dominion Bank was formed via a merger of The Dominion Bank and The Bank of Toronto. The bank underlined its philosophy of customer service and product knowledge. 

In the coming decades, the bank grew exceedingly and began introducing new service lines to serve its diverse clientele. In 1980, Toronto Dominion Bank began investing in international money marketing trading and commercial real estate development. 

TD proceeded to acquire stakes in several businesses in the 90s. They acquired assets of Central Guaranty Trust in 1992 and Waterhouse Investor Inc. in 1996. 

More growth and acquisitions led Toronto Dominion to become among the largest banks by branch number in North America in 2008. The final combination came by way of Operations of Commerce and TD Banknorth to become the popularly known TD Bank. 

To date, TD Bank continues to make innovative acquisitions and improve its services retaining its tag as America's Most Convenient Bank.
