Yahoo’s Story

Yahoo was founded by two electrical engineering graduate students at Standford University, Jerry Yang and David Filo, in 1994. However, Yahoo’s journey started three months earlier, when the duo created a human-edited web directory named Jerry and David’s guide to the World Wide Web. They took the name Yahoo! in March 1994. Yahoo is actually a backronym for “Yet Another Hierarchically Organized Oracle”. Back then, the database in Yahoo was arranged in layers of subcategories.

Yahoo was incorporated in 1995 and soon became the most popular web directory and search engine. The headquarter is located in Sunnyvale, California. Yahoo grew significantly in the 90s. The company developed and added many platforms, such as a web portal, free email, photo network platform, and instant messaging feature that allows its user to converse on the web. Yahoo also acquire RocketMail in 1997, one of the major free webmail services. It became a public company in 1996 and recorded impressive growth in its stock price in a short amount of time.

The company has had a tight rivalry with Google ever since. Microsoft made an offer to acquire Yahoo, but the latter declined the proposition. Then in 2016, Horizon announced that it will acquire Yahoo’s internet business for $4,83 billion.

Some former and current employees were applying online, through campus recruiting, or with a referral. The hiring process consists of three or four rounds of interviews. Starting with a phone screening with HR, then continuing with an interview with the hiring manager and a group interview. The interviews are behavioral and technical, especially for those who applied for the tech roles. The entire process took a week up to six weeks.
