Snapchat introduced its ‘Snap map safety features’, a tool that allows its users to look out for each other while they are on the way home or on the way to their meeting points. In May 2022, Snapchat also worked with several organizations to combat the fentanyl epidemic in the USA by enhancing its machine learning models to detect drug-related text, images, and emojis. As of March 2022, Snapchat removed more than 90% of dangerous drug-related content.

Controversies

As a multimedia company that relies on its camera feature as its core business, Snapchat’s service concerns the public mostly on its data and privacy regulation. When the company launched ‘Snap Map’, a feature that broadcasts its user’s location, concerns were raised against it. The media reported that Snap Map’s feature might enable stalkers and that users did not aware of that features. In its early updates, the app would update users’ position automatically every time they opened the app, not just when they captured a snap. Responding to the media, the Snapchat spokesperson said that users can use ‘ghost mode’ to limit mutuals who are able to see their real-time location.
