Your role

About the Internship:

National Geographic Society is seeking a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Intern to join their Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) team, which supports efforts to consistently consider the needs and perspectives of historically excluded and underrepresented groups in the Society’s programmatic and operational areas. Over 10 weeks, the intern will experience what DEI work entails in a non-profit setting, get exposed to foundational DEI concepts, and support the team in planning virtual events, conducting research, and interacting with National Geographic Explorers.

Principal learning responsibilities:

  • Help organize and conduct interviews with National Geographic Explorers to understand the impact and importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in their work. (30%)
  • Gain valuable hands-on experience by supporting a variety of DEI strategic initiatives through survey data analysis, project tracking and evaluation, and research. (25%)
  • Sharpen virtual event planning skills by supporting the planning and implementation of virtual events for staff and National Geographic Explorers. (25%)
  • Learn about foundational concepts such as unconscious bias, psychological safety, culturally conscious interactions, and more. (10%)
  • Understand and gain behind-the-scenes knowledge of how the employee resources group operates by providing NGS staff Inclusion Network support, including Heritage Month and cultural moment planning. (10%)

About you

Related Field of Study Required:

  • Current undergraduate or graduate students in any major or field of study are welcome to apply.
  • Previous internship experience preferred but not required.
  • Students will need to be enrolled in school during the internship.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Demonstrated interest in and commitment to diversity, equity & inclusion (e.g., prior participation in a DEI-focused club or event).
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct detailed independent research with minimal supervision.
  • Experience supporting virtual and in-person events.
  • Proficiency with Google Workplace (Docs, Sheets, Slides) and/or Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Additional Information:

  • A student must be enrolled in an accredited college or university and be eligible to work in the U.S. to qualify.
