Your Role

The Developer Velocity Lab in Microsoft Research and ES365 Engineering Systems team in the Experiences and Devices division seek interns with a demonstrated desire to advance the state-of-the-art in software development, developer communities, software analytics, and related topics through curiosity-driven and user-inspired research. 

Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

    Microsoft certain roles are eligible for additional rewards, including annual bonuses and stock. These awards are allocated based on individual performance. In addition, certain roles can earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee’s role. The salary for this role ranges from approximately $101,000 to $146,000. US-based employees gain access to healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan and company match, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, and fitness benefits.

    About You

    In addition to the qualifications below, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position.     • Must be accepted or currently enrolled in a Masters's or Ph.D. program in CS, EE, or a related STEM field.
    • Must have at least 1 year of experience in conducting research, writing peer-reviewed publications, and software development. 

    Interns are expected to be physically located in their manager’s Microsoft worksite location for the duration of their internship.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Ability to think unconventionally to derive creative and innovative solutions. 
    • Actively conducting research in at least one of the following areas: software engineering and/or human-computer interaction applied to software engineering systems, mining software repositories, software analytics, software developer ecosystems, and developer communities.
    • Experience with mixed methods approaches.
    • Ability to collaborate effectively with your mentor and others in Microsoft on research projects. 
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, cross-group, and cross-culture collaboration skills.
