Your role

  • Conduct interdisciplinary research via mixed-methods approaches such as qualitative or quantitative studies, building, and testing prototypes, running experiments, and conducting data analyses. 
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary members of the HAX Team, MSR partners including in the ASI and FATE groups, and people across Microsoft’s responsible AI ecosystem including Aether (Microsoft’s advisory group on AI, Ethics and Effects in Engineering and Research) and the Office of Responsible AI. 
  • Share results through research product impact, publications, presentations, and/or releasing code or artifacts. 

Training, development & rotations

Microsoft internships will be built for in-person and virtual experiences. The hybrid by-design approach at all locations around the world will provide a high-quality experience while keeping the health and safety of the employees, interns, and their families at the highest priority.

Compensation & benefits

The estimated total pay for this role ranges from approximately US$60,000- US$104,000. As a Microsoft employee, you'll also receive the following benefits:

As a User Experience Research Intern, you will drive a human-centered strategy, help set product direction, and contribute directly to ongoing product development by integrating insights about human behaviors, attitudes, practices, and norms. You’ll conduct analyses, distill quantitative and qualitative data into actionable insights, and actively contribute to achieving product outcomes that delight customers and meet desired organizational goals.

About you

  • Must be currently enrolled in a relevant Ph.D. program in Computer Science or a related field. 
  • Demonstrated technical, critical thinking, and creative skills to drive original research (such as through published papers or released technologies). 
  • Interdisciplinary expertise in AI and HCI (such as through coursework or hands-on experience working with ML/NL systems, HCI methods, and users.).  
  • Intrinsic interest and curiosity to improve human-AI interaction and the impact of AI on people and society and to enable responsible and human-centered AI, especially through interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches when necessary.  
  • Excellent, proactive communication skills to brainstorm and frame research directions, and solutions, and for disseminating research. 
  • Time management skills and growth mindset.
