The L'Oréal Story

L'Oréal was founded in the year 1909 through the genius of a French chemist named Eugène Schueller who developed an innovative hair dye formula called Oréale for women who wanted to have blond hair. This formula was truly unlike anything else on the market as it was safe to use, and it was then being sold to Parisian hairdressers and marked as the beginning of its rise to becoming a cosmetic giant.

Using this momentum, Schueller registered his company in 1919 under the name Safe Hair Dye Company of France and began focusing on researching and innovating beauty products which led to the company eventually being renamed L'Oréal as it catapulted into popularity. By 1920, the company employed 3 chemists. By 1950, a 100 chemists; by 1984, a 1,000 and now has an estimated 88,000 in 2022.

L'Oréal may have gotten its start in the hair dye business but it has soon branched out into various fields of beauty and its products can now be found in numerous distribution channels from your local supermarket, pharmacies and hair salons to luxury beauty outlets.

Culture & vibe

L'Oréal stays true to its founder's words of “A company is not walls and machines, it’s people, people, people.” by striving to foster an environment where interns, apprentices and management trainees feel empowered at all stages of their careers. The company encourages its freshers to bring their whole self to work, to be able to ask questions like Why? Or Why not? And present your ideas without fear.

New employees shouldn’t expect to take a back seat at L'Oréal but instead act as if you’re the CEO of your own projects and never worry as they embody a learning culture wherein you get to embrace all risks, learn from your mistakes and grow. And, not to mention that L'Oréal hosts their own World Cup every June where you get to play all kinds of sports against other L'Oréal employees worldwide. How cool is that?

Moreover, L'Oréal has a plethora of awards to prove it as the company ranks eighth in the Universums Ranking of the World’s Most Attractive Employers and is Top 10 of the Thomson Reuters Global Diversity & Inclusion Index in 2017 wherein they aim to hire employees from a wide range of backgrounds.
