The GBI Story 

In March 1937, Governor E.D. Rivers established the department of public safety as the frontier statewide law enforcement agency in Georgia. 

The Governor also created two security divisions; the uniform and plain clothes divisions. The latter was given a license to regulate fingerprint and criminal history information and to assign agents to assist the uniform officers in solving crimes within the state. 

Dr Herman Jones introduced forensic laboratory activities in the early 1940s. In 1972, Governor Jimmy Carter aimed to clamp down on crimes in the state. His first step in this process was to commission a task force to develop a Criminal Justice Information System for Georgia. This task force, the Georgia Crime Information Center was later placed under the GBI. 

In 1974, Governor Jimmy Carter introduced the reorganization act which led the GBI to separate from the department of public safety. 

Since its inception, the GBI continues to enjoy expansion through groundbreaking technological innovations. They continue to play a prominent role in the investigation, forensic analysis, and providing updated criminal information.

For graduate and internship applicants who satisfactorily complete the interview processes, a comprehensive background check is run on them. 

The entire hiring process at GBI takes a few months and selected candidates are onboarded and introduced into roles in the organization.

Controversies 

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has had its fair share of controversies since its inception. One of the more recent cases came in 2018 and was an embezzlement case involving a high-ranking officer in the organization. 

The officer at the time was placed in a position of trust and gained access to funds that were meant for running the organization. Despite holding several high-ranking positions within the organization, the officer had embezzled north of $60,000 before the indictment. 

While the organization is still held in high esteem based on the sorts of investigations they handle, the case showed that even the purest organizations can be breached.
