The Bloomberg Story 

Bloomberg L.P. is a private financial, software, data, and media company based in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. The company was co-founded by Michael Bloomberg with Thomas Secunda, Duncan MacMillan, and Charles Zegar, and a 12% ownership investment by Bank of America. It was founded in 1981 to provide financial software tools and enterprise applications.

In 1981, the company acquired Salomon Brothers, and Michael Bloomberg, a general partner, was given a $10 million partnership settlement. Bloomberg has designed in-house computerized financial systems for Salomon Brothers. He used this partnership buyout to start Innovative Market Systems (IMS). Later, he developed and built his computerized system to provide real-time market data for financial calculations and analytics. 

Today, Bloomberg has offices in 167 locations around the world and the company is known for its non-hierarchical corporate culture.

Controversies 

Turner Construction and Bloomberg LP construction scandal were the two biggest controversies in the life of Bloomberg. Between 2010 and 2017, a ‘pay-to-play’ scheme went along between two Bloomberg executives, two Turner Construction executives, and vendors and subcontractors involving Bloomberg’s office’s interior construction. 

The company’s construction manager was sentenced to two years in prison in July 2020 for tax evasion and accepting bribery. Later in September 2020, the Director of Global Construction at Bloomberg was found guilty of evading taxes and receiving bribes. He was sentenced to prison for three years and two months in January 2021.
